01 THE KAYAK
The type of kayak is very important for such an expedition that’s why I chose an English sea kayak from Valley Nordkapp. It is 550 cm long, has a maximum width of 60 cm, a depth of about 30 cm and an empty mass of 30 kg. The canoe is made entirely of fiberglass, has three watertight compartments, and is equipped with a water pump, a nautical compass and a rudder.
02 THE ITINERARY/ROUTE
I will have to cover 380 nautical miles or 700 km in salty waters with an average temperature around 2° C in the period scheduled for the crossing. The departure point will be from Cape Deseado on Isla Desolacion in the Pacific Ocean and the arrival in Punta Dungeness overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Halfway there will be only one supply stop in Punta Arenas.
03 WEATHER FORECASTS
I will have only six, maximum seven hours of light per day. The famous katabatic winds are constant and always very strong in this geographical area, reaching a speed of 100 knots, that is 185 km/h. The rain is also always present with an average of twenty-two rainfalls per month.
04 THE DURATION
The departure from Italy is scheduled for April 21, 2013 and the return for June 6, 2013. The total duration of the crossing of the entire Strait of Magellan is expected to be about six weeks. Weather conditions will be very important for the success of the expedition.
05 THE EQUIPMENT
The equipment of the single-seater Valley NordKapp includes: a carbon paddle, a waterproof suit model Extreme of Sandiline, a tent, a sleeping bag, a gasoline stove with reserves for cooking and heating water, 75 bags of freeze-dried and dehydrated food, three water bags for a total of 14 liters, camera, video cameras, solar panel and kit for recharging the battery, two Garmin GPS with compass and maps/charts.
